Education Promotion Society to move SC on deemed varsities issue

10/2/2010

The Education Promotion Society of India (EPSI) will file a petition in the Supreme Court, pleading to involve it as a third party petitioner in the ongoing case of derecognition of deemed universities, said G Viswanathan, president of EPSI and chancellor of Vellore Institute of Technology, here on Tuesday. He said the EPSI would represent 44 deemed varsities in the court.

Speaking to the media persons on the sidelines of a discussion session oraganised for the representatives of deemed universities and private institutions of the western region, he said the EPSI would represent the larger perspective of higher education.

According to Viswanathan, the Tandon Committee has asked the government to derecognise a few institutes that have got A grade from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). This has happened despite the fact that Govardhan Mehta, who is the chairman of NAAC, is also a member of the Tandon Committee.

Manohar Chellani, secretary general, EPSI, said deemed universities plays an important role in higher education in the country. Our demand is only to have transparency in the process. We are not going to guard any institute or varsity that are found guilty, he said.

Chellani urged the state governments to cooperate to evolve more deemed universities or autonomous institutes for quality higher education.
